What Your Guild Might Ask of You in a Raid
Thu, 03/12/2009 - 13:57
When you start raiding for the first time, the biggest culture shock many players face is the fact that the character style they’re used to playing might not be good enough for the raid leader. There are players who, as Paladins, Druids, Warlocks, or Priests might be required to shift their talent specs, their style of play or their location in the raid according to who shows up on raid night and how many players are going into the raid. If you want to be drawn upon as much as possible and to prove that you are worth the efforts of your guild leaders, you need to be flexible and willing (plus able) to adapt quickly.
How Will You Adapt
To be fair, some classes don’t need to adapt all that much. Mages, Warlocks, and Warriors are not going to be asked to change what they do. They have roles in a raid that don’t change all that much. They might be asked to get a certain ability ready or to make certain items, but they’re not going to need to move. A Warrior with Protection spec is usually a tank, and Mages and Warlocks are always DPS (though Warlocks might on occasion prove useful as ranged OTs for short spurts).
However, those of you out there with hybrid classes such as the Paladin, Druid, Shaman, or Death Knight (and sometimes Priest), will find that your role in the fight becomes much more fluid. In some fights, a DK or Druid might prove to be a more effective tank for resistance reasons while Shamans might be great at support in one fight and work as off healers in another fight.
The long and short of it is that if you have abilities that work for tanking, dps and healing together on your character, you should be ready to use any of them at any time.
How Will I Know to Switch
In a raid, once the fight is started, you’ll almost always have a set position to work on. You’re not going to be tanking for one trash mob, then DPS for the next and then Healing on a boss. But, between bosses or instances as a whole, you might find that the needs of your raid party change and that is when you should be willing to switch.
Of course, you need to be honest. If you know nothing about DK tanking (it’s a tough role), you should say so upfront. Everyone in that raiding party is going to rely on the tank to keep them alive (by staying alive). If you fail to do that one thing repeatedly even when you claim to know what you are doing, your peers may not be pleased.

- Character Model Revisions to come in Cataclysm? -
In a recent interview J. Allen Brack touched on the subject of character model
changes and when/if we might be seeing them. Now we all know that many players
have been expressing their discontent with the pre-BC character models since
they aren't as "pretty" as the Blood Elves and Draenei and others like the old
school models and claim that they are part of the character of the game. See what J. Allen
had to say about it... - The9's Split With Blizzard Proves Costly - The9,
the company formerly responsible for the distribution of WoW in China has
reported a 94% drop in revenue when compared to this time last year. Although
executive are downplaying the loss stating that they have noticed significant
growth in their other licencing venues, the impact of losing the WoW publishing
rights to Netease back in June is more than apparent. Now, WoW is currently in a
power struggle with more than one Chineese government agency, which means the
game is under suspension at the moment until all the kiks get ironed out. - Comic Corner - Ok, so last week we moved the laughs
over to the blog to save some space. So for all the latest Warcraft related
funnies make sure you check out the Comic Corner on our
blog... - New Panderen Brewmaster Figure - In case you have
an extra $50 lying around that you weren't sure what to do with this holiday
season, Blizzard has (as usual) come up with a way to part you from your money!
The Blizzard store received an addition this week in the form of a Pandaren Brewmaster Figure. The figure is of Chen Stormstout
and measures an impressive 8 inches tall and weighs more than 4 pounds. These
figures are usualy of pretty high quality and the detail on this one is eqally
impressive. Will make a good collector's piece for those interested. - Movie of the Week - This featured newsletter
section has also been moved over to our blog, so to check out this week's movie
choices be sure to hit up the Movie of the
Week there... - New Kirin Tor Rings in 3.3 - In a statement that
really wasn't a surprise to anyone, Bornakk confirmed that players will see a new set of Kirin Tor rings
with the arrival of 3.3. The new rings will be item level 251 which will be a
significant upgrade for anyone still using the item level 226 ring that was
introduced along with Ulduar. The ring upgrades are, as usual, pretty pricey
which is again no big surprise! - Product Spotlight - This week's WoW product
spotlight is on the recently updated Warcraft Instance and Raiding Guide. The recent round of
updates this guide has received puts it in sync with ALL currently available
raid content! This guide covers everything raiders are doing these days from the
Northrend five mans and Ulduar bosses to older raids from the Burning Crusade.
We have compiled boss kill strategies for every boss in every instance

Raiding, 10 Man or 25 Man? How Do You Choose?
Mon, 30/11/2009 - 21:22
Raiding is a rite of passage for any World of Warcraft player. It demonstrates that you are not only at the top of the leveling scheme – a full Level 80 – but it shows that you are well respected by your fellow players in a guild and that you are well equipped and effective enough in your role to go in and be responsible for a key role in the defeat of major bosses.
But, these days, those new to raiding are finding that the content is more complex and numerous than ever before. Every raid comes in 10 or 25 man modes, there are new versions of old raids being added to the game all the time, and now with the advent of the Trial of the Grand Crusader, there are hard modes for raids, effectively creating 4 different modes for each encounter.
So, How Does This All Work?
The first thing to know is that 10 man raiding is very similar to 25 man raiding, even if you don’t get as good of gear and the bosses are much easier. More than anything else though, it is tremendous practice for a 25 man boss that might otherwise wipe you silly. It also makes it easier to practice for every raid. A smaller guild may only be able to get 25 people together once a week, but 10 people might be up for raiding 3 or 4 nights a week – and they can do so by practicing whenever the game allows.
So, what does all this mean for anyone that is interested in figuring out what is going to happen when they hit Level 80? To start with, you need to do 10 man raids first. It’s not just that 25 man raids are harder, there is a gear gap between dungeons and 25 man raids now that makes it impossible to go straight from one to the other. You’ll need to spend a bit of time working on getting the right ilvl gear in 10 man raids to reach the 25 man content.
Whatever your current position, if you are just starting out on raiding for the first time, take your time and learn what it takes to do it properly. That means spending your time learning about the different ways to play your character, different combinations of talent specs you can use, and how you might be used by your raid party leader.

Mastering the 3.2 Raid Content in the Argent Coliseum
Sun, 29/11/2009 - 13:23
New raid content can always be a little overwhelming upon first peek. Many people have no idea what they are supposed to be doing when they walk into a new raid for the first time and in the case of the Argent Coliseum, things were a bit tougher due to the prevalence of the fact that the encounters were only unlocked a week at a time.
Depending on when you’re reading this, there may still be some hard mode bosses that have not yet been defeated due to the lockouts. But, for anyone that feels intimidated by not having time to practice and get ready for their first 25 man encounter with Anub’Arak, there are some ways to get ready.
Reading Up on It
While many people may be behind the curve, there are a lot of players who are out there defeating new content as soon as it is available. Still others were defeating this content on the PTR weeks ago and they are even further ahead than most. As with any new content in the game, the first thing you should do is to go out and start researching what you can do to get started. This means reading up on the past encounters, the gear and stat needs, and whatever else you can do early to get prepared.
Keep Practicing
Even if you think you’re reading for the newest raid content and have defeated everything else, sitting back and waiting for a few weeks is a bad idea. Keep practicing, even when something isn’t available or you are forced to sit and wait for your guild to get into the idea of going after new content.
Take Notes and Be Persistent
The Trial of the Crusader is a tough raid instance for a few reasons. First, you need to adjust your strategies significantly with The Faction Champion, going into a PvP mode many of you may not be used to. Second, there are the Val’kyr that are just a chaotic mess. Strategy there is hard to maintain. Finally, there are a few million people who already think they know how Anub’Arak is going to play out – check that knowledge at the door. On 25 man mode or in heroic 25 man mode, Anub’Arak is something else entirely.

- Blizzard Releases Bosstiary for Frozen Halls -
Surrounding the live release of Ulduar, Blizzard released what they called a
Bosstiary which gave you details you don't get in-game like the exact origin of
the bosses what they are doing where they are and why you must fight them. Now
Blizz has released the same thing for The Frozen Halls, patch 3.3's collection
of new Icecrown 5-man dungeons. The latest Bosstiary serves as an encyclopedia of sorts for the various
bosses in these dungeons complete with maps indicating boss positions and all
the info you need to know exactly who you're fighting and why they must be
destroyed! - Shadowmourne is Revealed - The latest PTR build
revealed the stats for the game's newest Legendary weapon, Shadowmourne. The
notable features include a +223 strength bonus, 344.1 base DPS, three red
sockets and a pretty sweet proc. The sockets combined and socketed with a Bold
Cardinal Ruby each will yeild an impressive 68 additional strength and the proc
stacks for up to 360 additional strength before firing off a damage effect and
resetting to 0. Needless to say, this Item Level 284 axe is the BEST two-handed
melee weapon Warcraft has seen to date! - Comic Corner - The newsletters have been getting
pretty lengthy, so I have decided to move the Comic Corner over to our blog.
Each week I will still put this section in the newsletter, but all the awesome
belly-laugh links will be posted in the blog entry. So head on over to the blog to see the latest from favorites like Dark Legacy, NoObz,
NPC and more! - New Epic Ammo on the PTR - Some good news coming
for Hunters with patch 3.3 in the form of new craftable epic ammo. The new Iceblade Arrows and
Shatter Rounds
are both available right now on the PTR to engineers who are honored with the
Ashen Verdict (the new Icecrown Faction). Both of these add a whopping 91.5
damage to ranged weapon DPS and are BoE, so all you need is an engineer buddy
and some pretty cheap mats and you can have yourself some epic ammo awesomeness! - Lots of New PvE Items Arriving With 3.3 - It seems
that with each and every patch Blizzard sets out to outdo themselves on the new
items front. With patch 3.1 we were all oooing and awwwing over the fact that
with the release of the Argent Tournament and Ulduar there were about 800 new
PvE items added to the game. Well, that number pales in comparison to the 1400
that are coming with Patch 3.3! While the most impressive item is, of course, Shadowmourne, I must
say that as a pretty much PvE only player the thought of 1400 more items makes
me all warm and fuzzy inside! - Movie of the Week - This is another section I have
decided to move off to the blog in the interest of saving space and trimming
down the size of our newsletters. I have a couple movies this week for Warcraft
fans and I think everyone will enjoy them, so head on over to the blog and take a peak! - Armored Frost Wyrm Mounts From Icecrown - Blizzard
poster Ancilorn confirmed this week in a Post on the WoW EU Forums that the previously data-mined
Armored Frost Wirm Mounts will be rewards doled out to dedicated Icecrown
raiders in 3.3's live release. Assumably these will be earned much in the same
way as Ulduar Drakes, for completing an Icecrown meta-acheivement. The Frost
Wyrm will offer it's rider a 310% increase in flying speed! - Pilgrim's Bounty is Here! - WoW's new holiday,
Pilgrim's Bounty, is now live on all realms offering players the opportunity to
stuff themselves with festive food in pursuit of the Pilgrim title and the super
adorable turkey pet (awww). I think this holiday was well done by Blizzard with
the abundance of holiday related mobs and plentiful cooking recipes. This one is
however not part of the What a Long, Strange Trip it's Been meta-acheivement so
I wonder if it will get the attention it deserves? I would definitely suggest
you check it out!

Getting 10,000 Gold in 1 Week the Easy Way
Tue, 24/11/2009 - 21:52
So, you want to get rich fast? What’s new? Everyone else in World of
Warcraft wants the same thing – yet most of them don’t even get close
to 10,000 gold at one time after years of play. So, what can a player
with no gold and minimal resources do to start making gold hand over
fist in as little as a week? There are a few strategies that can help,
but they require a great deal of care and attention to the necessary
skills that come with elite farming and auction house work.
1. Mining and Herbalism
The easiest way to make gold in World of Warcraft is with mining or
herbalism. You can choose to pick up both, but most players will have
at least one crafting profession to go along with them, making their
lives a bit easier in the process. For those truly interested in raking
in huge dough however, Mining and herbalism are the best place to start.
To get going, make sure that you can log on at a time when your server
is light on players. This might be 3am for some people or 2pm for
others. But, don’t walk into an overcrowded farming fest or you’ll
never get your gold stash built up.
Head to Icecrown if you
are a miner or Sholazar Basin if you are an herbalist. Start doing
loops around these two zones. Miners should stay in the northern half
of the zone, following a similar loop to the two airships. Herbalists
should stay close to the water in Sholazar and if they have mining,
walk around the pillars throughout the zone to get the mining nodes
there.
Ideally, miners should be able to get between 300 and
800 gold an hour from Titanium nodes and Saronite Nodes, assuming they
are without too much competition. Herbalists should be able to get
between 200 and 400 gold an hour from Icethorn and Lichbloom with
occasional Frost Lotus spawns.
2. Auction House
Once you have farmed your materials, it’s time to start selling it.
This is where your Auction House skills need to come in handy. Make
sure to have Auctioneer installed and scan the Auction House a few
times before doing anything. Once you get the hang of a good cycle,
when the prices go up for your reagents, use that time to sell.
Usually, the best time to sell ore is in the early afternoon, before
everyone gets home and needs their reagents, and well before the other
farmers go out and start selling. Herbalists should aim for a couple of
hours before raiders get on and start creating their flasks – usually
between 4pm-6pm server time.
Ideally, you should be able to
get as much as 150% of the normal value for your ore and herbs by
selling at peak hours and holding at trough hours. If you follow this
strategy, as simple as it sounds and manage to get good runs in 6
nights a week, you can have 10,000 gold in one week – easy as that.
Enjoy!

Raid Progression in Northrend
Fri, 20/11/2009 - 18:15
When you hit level 80, there are a lot of things you could do. You could start earning gold with daily quests and auction house strategies. You could spend your time trying to figure out how to get a new character up to Level 80. You could defeat your opponents in Arena and Battleground play. Or you could join the millions of player who go out 2 and 3 nights a week to dungeons and raid instances throughout Northrend.
There are currently 17 different instances in WotLK content (16 in Northrend and one additional in the Caverns of Time) that include over 150 different encounters and countless modes through which to fight those encounters. But, for anyone that is relatively new to the game or who has spent most of their end-game time in PvP or other end-game activities, running dungeons and raids can be a bit intimidating, especially with all those other top rated players out there showing off their Tier 9 gear and uber epic gear.
Starting Small
So, how do you start small and build your way up in a game that requires so much time investment and careful attention to detail to pull things off. It may seem overwhelming at first, but the truth is that if you start small and work your way up to the hardest, most time devouring content in the game, you’ll quickly find that there are many ways to take on this content without getting completely destroyed each time.
1. Find a Team of Like Minded Individuals – Most people think too far ahead. They try to find a player who is already Tier 9 to help them defeat Level 72 dungeons so they can catch up. But you learn nothing this way. The better route is to find a team of likeminded players who you can join up with and play along with as you complete the early instances in The Nexus and Utgarde Keep.
2. Don’t Expect Too Much – If you’re a raiding noob, don’t get frustrated. You’ll wipe a few times early on. Just keep trying and pay attention to what works and doesn’t.
3. Do Your Research – You may need to do some research to make things work for you. This means spending time online watching YouTube videos of other raiders, reading up on current instance strategies, and learning what others are doing to get through this content.
In the end, if you are really serious about getting ahead in the instances of Northrend, you should start small, find a good team, and build from there. Before you know it, in just a few short weeks, you’ll be tearing apart high level content with the best of them.

What You Can Gain from a Warrior PvE Guide
Wed, 18/11/2009 - 20:21
Ah, the Warrior – one of the most static, well balanced classes in World of Warcraft. It receives the fewest nerfs or buffs with each major patch and it continues to play the same roles year in and year out in raiding. Yet, being an effective Warrior in PvE requires that you have a very good understanding of your class and that you practice effusively. This is where a good Warrior PvE Guide can come in and make all the difference.
What a Warrior PvE Guide Does
Warriors essentially come in three flavours, but when it comes to raiding, you’re going to be a Protection Warrior or a Fury Warrior (largely because of Titan’s Grip). You’ll either be a tank or a DPS dealer.
And most Warriors become tanks because it is the quickest route into a raiding party – especially with the highly specialized actions that a Warrior has on hand to tank with. Even with Blizzard working hard to make Tanking more accessible to other classes, the Warrior sits atop that pile and probably always will.
So, a good Warrior PvE Guide needs to provide details on how to tank as well as possible. It needs to provide details on what gear to get, how to implement buffs and consumables, how to spec your talent tree and what specific abilities you’re going to need to do as well as possible in your position.
Fury Warriors, if they want to be in a Raiding Party need to be as good at their position as possible. So a good Warrior PvE Guide will be essential to mastering the various different attacks and DPS sustaining abilities they have, like Titan’s Grip. The ability to dual wield two handed weapons will boost your DPS immensely, but it needs to be done properly with enough stats and the right weapons.
Getting the Most of Your Warrior PvE Guide
If you’re serious about raiding as a Warrior, start spending as much time as you can working on building up your strategies for the class. Practice in numerous settings, go on low level instance runs, and even if you never play as Protection while levelling, play as it when you hit level 80, just on daily quests. You need to be as acclimated as possible to the ways of the Warrior to be a good raider. The days of getting an instant spot in a raid because you are a Warrior are passed – it’s time to earn that role.
